Lyrics with a list

Madness - Our House

Father wears his Sunday best
Mother's tired she needs a rest
The kids are playing up downstairs
Sister's sighing in her sleep
Brother's got a date to keep
He can't hang around

When we talk about a list in English, the topics are expressed with declining intonations except for the last topic, and the last topic is expressed with rising intonation.

  1. Actually it should be the other way around. But the important thing is that you show the listener that you haven't finished speaking until you have finished. The way you say the last bit should always be different. Typically that is with a lowered tone. We will talk a bit more about this tomorrow.
